Recent news has been focused on community colleges. It causes me to reflect on my own experience – one that I have been casual about, yet suddenly understand the full value.
In community college, I was surrounded by people of all backgrounds, ages and range of finances – a natural ecosystem of diverse thinking. All my classmates chose to be there and were purposeful about their education, and almost all were balancing full-time jobs. In return, professors understood that the student was their customer. Community college taught us self-esteem and that we were advanced learners. It readied us for the next part of our lives.
Every time I hear a great parenting story, or news of a front-line hero, or of someone rescuing a neighbor, I wonder if they, at some point, benefitted from community college.
