Dr. Garret Westlake of VCU’s da Vinci Center for Innovation offers an important distinction between a good idea and an innovative idea.

Westlake says that a good idea is an incremental improvement from a current idea. It makes sense and everyone nods. An innovative idea, however, is one that requires us to break a rule – it’s uncomfortable. It responds to the needs of the end user, not our own need for comfort.

What if we took that fresh, innovative approach to our product, our company – our life? The next right step may not be rooted at all in the foundation of our status quo.
