During a speech at the Jewish Community Center, well-known Watergate investigative journalist Carl Bernstein addressed the diminished focus among Americans on the “common good.” Is our do-it-yourself, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps culture working against us? Is it an either/or, or can we commit to the genius of the “and” ? I mean, can we also apply our rugged individualism to efforts that serve the common good?
