I was living and traveling between Montgomery County, MD and Richmond, VA in 2002 when two gunmen were committing random sniper attacks.

My ever-present memory of those three weeks of terror was the steady, empathetic, strong, and transparent voice of Police Chief Charles Moose. It all came back to me as I read Chief Moose’s obituary.

I remember being anxious every moment of my travels. That was the only time in my life when I would not stop on I-95 for gas or a restroom. It was my first and only experience with constant terror and imminent danger. Remembering those feelings makes me suddenly aware that what was a scary moment in time for me is a way of life for others in communities near me and around the world.
