Strategically growing a B Corp while maintaining their vision
“Nancy Eberhardt is an excellent listener and she operates within your company’s framework, not hers or another business’ framework. She understands the difference.”
Situation:
Driven by an intrinsic nature to serve, B Corps are revolutionizing how to generate value for businesses while solving social and environmental problems. They are corporations that pay taxes and also commit to the common good. One B Corp company, finding itself past the start-up phase and entering their scaling-up phase, realized that it needed a better strategic plan and new methods of executing well. While it was doing fine financially and giving its profits post-tax to the community, additional issues were facing them. They were eager to grow rapidly, while still remaining committed to the founders’ vision. They also needed additional investors and to hire even more senior, experienced leaders who were interested in the social impact of the organization, yet warranted a significant compensation plan.
Solution:
Using the Gazelles Scaling Up methodology, Pathwise guided the management team and board members to refine the business’ purpose, core values, BHAG (Jim Collins’ Big Hairy Audacious Goal), and focus on certain strategic priorities. Roles were refined and additional key people were hired. Accountabilities were made clear and are owned throughout a new leadership team.
Results:
The strategic business plan was used to raise capital and re-create the Board for the future. The entire business model was re-formed, allowing for equity by individuals and beneficiary charitable organizations. This set the stage for additional financial benefit for employees, traditional investors and community nonprofit owners in the event of a sale of the company. The organization’s management team, staff and Board are more aligned and focused on the critical metrics and milestones for the fast growth they desire. An aligned focus on increased revenues, profit, value of the company, and contribution to the community are driving all decisions.
